New Concept & Question Board

As we start Unit 2 on Habitats in Reading, I am asking students to bring in pictures of tree dwellers.  A tree dweller is a person or animal who makes a tree its natural habitat.  Students have been reading about tree dwellers in their story, "One Small Place in a Tree" in the classroom.  As a way to help students make a connection with this story, they can research other tree dwellers and bring in pictures of them to put on the board.

November Book Order

Dear Parents,

Please let me know if you are ordering books as gifts for your child.  I can put these books aside when they come in and have you pick them up in the office at your convenience.  If the books are gifts for other family members, I can send them home in a bag with your child.

Enjoy your book shopping,

Mrs. Coulon

As we are working with adding larger numbers to 10,000 (Chapter 3) in math, it is very important that students are practicing their facts.  We have been adding 4 digit numbers without regrouping and 4 digit numbers when they only needed to regroup in the hundreds.  Over the next week, we will be adding 4 digit numbers with regrouping in the ones, tens, and hundreds.  It is even more important that students know their facts.  Please keep encouraging your child to practice their facts using the XtraMath Website.

Beauty in the Beast

Today before reading "Beauty and the Beast", I had students fill out a KWL chart.  For K, students had to fill out what they Know about "Beauty and the Beast".  I explained that student could use their prior knowledge about the book or movie.  Then I had students fill out the W, what students Want to know.  We had a few good questions that students were interested in finding out.  After we are done with the story, students will fill out the L sections, what students have Learned.  Take a look at what students have filled out already.

Making Connections

On Monday, we read the story "Good-bye 382, Shin Dang Dong" for the second time.  As the students were reading the story to each other, I asked them to make connections with the story.  Here are some the responses.  I have put the student's cubby number next to their connection.  Here they are..

Cubby Number                    Connections

16                               * I have had to move away from a good friend.

15                               * I have not understood someone when talking before.

      14                               * I have moved away before

10                               * I did not understand a different (foreign) word once.

3                                * When I moved to HMS, I felt scared because everything was new.

13                               * They ate melons and we eat melons.

       6                                * I have moved away before.

22                               * I would feel bad if I left my friend Tiago.

9                                * One of my friends has moved away before.

Zones of Regulation - Guidance

Today we had our second Guidance class. Mrs. Jordan talked to the students about Zones of Regulation. Students had to take different feelings and put them into the correct zone. Then they came up with situations and put them into the correct zone. For example: losing papers, forgetting homework, etc.

100 Squares Party

Where:  Mrs. Coulon’s Classroom
When:  Friday, October 9, 2015
Time:  12:30 to 1:30 and 2:30 to 3:00PM

Dear Parents,

Wow!!!  The students have earned their first 100 Squares Party.  They have worked really hard at being responsible, respectful, and safe.  Now, it is time to reward them for all their hard work.
The students and I have discussed the theme for the first party.  We decided to have a Pajama Party and watch a movie.  We will be voting on what movie by Wednesday.  Students may bring in (please do not wear to school) appropriate PJ’s to school and a favorite blanket or “small” pillow.  While watching the movie, students will also be enjoying snacks.  I will supply the drinks.  I am asking parents to volunteer to send in an extra snack on the day of the party for their child only.  Please keep in mind the Wellness Policy.

Thank you,
Mrs. Coulon

AR Rewards

For October, I am asking students to complete a Reading Log.  Students will be asked to:

    - read 200 minutes
    - complete 2 AR tests(80% or better)

As students take tests and earn points, I will start my rewards system.  They can earn:

- a sticker for 5 points
- a pencil for 10 points
- a free book in the book order for 25 points
- lunch with me for 30 points.

I can't wait to see what rewards the students choose!

Book Buddies

Today we had our first meeting with our Book Buddies, Mrs. Rehm's Class. We met in the library and introduced ourselves to each other. Each pair of Book Buddies had to find out their partners favorite ice cream flavor. Then our reading groups read their fluency play, "Damon & Pythias" to their book buddies. It was a great time!
