October Weekly Homework

October will have new Weekly Homework.  Students will complete a math worksheet (two sided) each week.  The spelling choices have changed as well and students just need to complete 15 points, which should be only 2 or 3 activities.  I have also attached a reading log so that I can see what books students are reading each week, which can be used with the October Book It.

October Book Order

The October Book Order is here.  I will be sending it home on Thursday.  Attached to the book order is a coupon for students to get one free book if you spend $10.  Happy shopping!!

October Book It

Book It!

We are starting our first month of the Book-It program.  Your child will be given
two goals to complete for the month.  For the month of October, the goals with be:

  1. 200 minutes of reading
  2. Two AR tests in October (you MUST pass the tests)

This means the students need to read 20 minutes, at least 10 days in October.  Please
have your child color in the calendar on the days he/she reads 20 minutes. Students
who complete all requirements will receive the ticket to get the free pizza (or I have free
kid's meal coupons to Applebee's).

Students are allowed to “double dip” and use their 20 minutes of reading homework
each night to count towards the Book It minutes.  Therefore, all students should have
no problem meeting the requirements for  a free personal pizza or kid’s meal!

The calendar will be sent home tomorrow so students can begin on October 1st!

Glogster

On Monday, Mrs. Beaudoin introduced the students to a site called Glogster.  This site allows students to make posters, projects, etc.  For our class, I decided to have the students make a poster on themselves called "All About Me".  We didn't get a chance to finish, but we are well on our way.  If you want to see your child's project in the making, feel free to have your child sign in and show you.  Their username is their firstname (capital first letter) last name initial (capital) and 3c.  For example: Sam Smith would be SamS3c.  The password is the same - SamS3c.  If you have a problem signing in, please contact me.

Click on the logo below to sign in

Enjoy!

** Please don't have students work on them at home.  They have all their notes in the classroom with the requirements.
Today in Guidance, students went over the zone of regulation.  Students had to take different situations and put them into the red, yellow, green or blue zone.  Then they went over each situation and voted (with sticks) on whether they thought each situation was put into the correct zone.  Students did a wonderful job!

On Thursday, the students will read with me in the classroom. Also, there is no Spelling Homework this week.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Guidance on Monday

On Monday, we had our first Guidance class. We went to Mrs. Jordan's room to discuss expected and unexpected behavior.  Ask the students some of the unexpected behavior that Mrs. Jordan showed at the beginning of class.  She asked the students to be social detectives to describe the activities she was doing.  Then Mrs. Jordan read the students a book on being a social detective.

Accelerated Reader (AR)

Accelerated Reader is up and running for third graders!  AR is a computer based reading comprehension program. "Your child picks a book at his own level and reads it at his own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) AR gives children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results."

Be aware that you cannot complete a google search for AR, as each school has it's own specific site. Be sure to use the Important Links tab for the correct AR website. In my class, students can earn rewards for their points!   The more challenging the book, the more points they earn.  However, if a child doesn’t pass the test, they do not earn any points.  Therefore, students should be choosing books that are at their appropriate reading level.  Quizzes can be taken at home or school but need to be completed independently by the student. Here is the HMS AR link. I am also challenging my students to read 1 million words each this year! We will keep track of the words read throughout the year.

To log in, your child will use the first letter of their first name, and first four letters of their last name as their username. Passwords are "abc". Students can begin taking quizzes immediately. I will send home more information about AR this week!

New Weekly Homework Packets

I have decided to change the way homework will work for now on.  On Monday, the students will come home with a Weekly Homework packet.  The front sheet (see below) can be used for students to organize and plan their week.  Please have your child check off what they complete each night.  Then on Thursday night, parents need to sign and return the packet for Friday.

This packet will have a spelling paper attached to it.  Students will have a choice of how they want to study their spelling words each week.  Below you will see an example of the spelling homework.  This week students need to complete enough activities to earn 15 points.  You will find descriptions of these activities on the back of this page when you receive the packet.

Also attached to the packet will be a math page (see example below).  Students only need to complete the first 4 columns, as we will complete the last column on Friday together.

This will continue to be a work in progress as this is the first time I have done Weekly Homework.  Please make sure this packet gets returned to school every Friday.  Also, the only other homework I plan to send home will be on Wednesdays (normally), when I will send home the story to be read and a slip to be returned signed.

Thank you for your patience and help as I implement this new homework.

Spelling Homework

For spelling homework this week, I have sent home a paper for the students to do four activities:
 * write spelling words 3 times each (3 different colors)
 * put in ABC Order
 * write spelling words 3 times each
 * write 4 spelling sentences

So, I need to apologize because as I was making this homework, I only left space for 9 spelling words instead of 15 spelling words.  For the first activity, writing spelling words 3 times each, students may use another paper.  For the ABC Order, students may add the lines to the side.  For spelling sentences, students can just do 4 sentences.  Sorry for the confusion.  I will fix this for next week.

This will all be DUE on Friday, September 9th.

Rules & Respect Contract

On Thursday, the students and I came up with the class rules (see below).

On Friday, we took those rules and used them to complete a respect contract for the classroom.  We started with the respect circle and then used that to make the respect contract.  On the bottom of the page, we discussed the consequences for not following the class rules and respect contract.  The respect contract will come home on Tuesday for students and parents to sign.

Friendship Pictures

The first unit in reading is on Friendship.  I have asked the students to bring in a picture of their friends for the Concept and Question Board.  The friendship pictures can be of family, friends, pets, etc.  I am only asking for one picture to put on the board, but feel free to send in more pictures if your child would like to share them.
