Support for a Student

Just an update on our support of a fellow student.  Last week, it came to our attention that one of the students in our class had a GoFundMe page in support of getting a new wheelchair van.  Each student decided to write a letter to one or two businesses in Hooksett to tell this student's story.  Yesterday, I sent out the letters and now we await any support from the community.  Please ask your child what business they wrote to.  I couldn't be more proud of the support the student's have shown our fellow student.

SCA - Week 6 - Habitats

On Wednesday, we had our 6th week of SCA.  Logan started us off by leading us in the "Earth Steward" pledge.  Mr. Pete spoke with the students about what makes up a habitat (food, shelter, water, space).  Then students played a game with the popsicles stick.  They had to try to get all four sticks to make a habitat.  After the game, the students broke up into three groups to learn about different NH animals.  Mr. Pete told the students about Barred Owl.  Ms. Kaitlin talked about the Bobcat.  Lastly, Ms. Hailey spoke about the Otter.  The students had a great time!

Measurement with Scales

Today, students used a scale to measure classroom objects to the nearest kilogram and gram.  First, they had to estimate how much they thought the object was going to weight.  Then, they were able to actually weigh the object.  Students were very surprised at how close they came to their predictions.

Week of March 20th

Due to the snow day and delay last week, we will have our reading test on Earthquake: The 1906 San Francisco Nightmare on Tuesday.  We have been focusing on text features.   Ask your child to show you these features (that can be found in nonfiction text or magazines) including captions, headings, photographs, maps, diagrams, and subtitles.

In math, we will continue Chapter 11 - Metric Measurement and the test will be on Friday. Then next week, we will use our abilities to convert metric measurement to solve word problems.

Reminders:

  • Students need recorders by April 6th for Music.  They need to be Soprano recorders.  They can be bought on Amazon for about $10 or locally at Music and Arts in Manchester.  If you are unable to get one, please contact myself or Miss Latham ASAP as she has a few available.
  • Third grade is the year the Smarted Balanced (SBAC) assessments begins.  It usually occurs towards the end of March for third graders.  Here is the link to the website so you can familiarize yourself with the test.  This testing is much different than NWEA (which students have been doing since K at Underhill) so we will practice the test many times beforehand.  Students can also practice at home and get familiar with the structure and tools.  It may be a good idea for you to see what your child is expected to be able to complete by helping them with the practice tests at home.  The link to the practice tests can be found here. You do not need any usernames or passwords.
    • As soon as our test dates are posted, I will be sure to post them!

Problem of the Week

This week, students had to solve a “Coloring Squared” page.  To solve this page, students had to solve each square by solving a multiplication problem.  When they were done, they were able to make a picture of a Leprechaun with a pot of gold.

CONGRATULATIONS!!
to the following students who solved the Problem of the Week

SCA - Week 5

This week Miss Kaitlin, Mr. Pete, and Miss Haley taught the students about the Water Cycle.  They had to label the parts of the Water Cycle on a worksheet.  Then they played a State of Water game, where students had to partner up depending on if the type of water that was called out. For example: Solid (group of 4), Liquid (partner) and Gas (all by yourself). Lastly, students make a class Rain Gauge.  We can't wait to put this outside the next time it is going to rain so we can see how much rain fell.

Fisher Cats

I apologize for the short notice... I am sending home a Fisher Cats flyer today with students that expressed interest in 2 free tickets.  Students have to write 5 books that they have read recently.  Then pick the game that they would like the 2 free tickets for.  The games with yellow stars after them have fireworks after the game. Lastly, parents have to send in the flyer by TOMORROW with $3.  Please do not send this in to school tomorrow as parents have to be the ones to send it in.  Also, it has to be postmarked by tomorrow.

Problem of the Week

This week, students had to solve a “Coloring Squared” page.  To solve this page, students had to take each fraction and put it into simplest form.  Once each square was in simplest form, students then had to use the key to color each square.  When they were done, they were able to make a picture of a Brachiosaurus.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

to the following students for solving this weeks problem of the week...

SCA - Week 4

Today, Miss Kaitlin explained what a river ecosystem was made of.  Then students created their own river ecosystems.

After Mr. Pete played a true or false game with the students.  He read a statement about river ecosystems.  Then the students had to go to one side of the room if they thought the statement was true or the other side of the room if they thought the statement was false.

Lastly, Miss Haley explained the definition of turbidity.  Then for the students to really get a hands on experience, they broke of into 3 groups and made their own river.  Then students had to dump dirt into the river and use a straw to blow air into.  Ask your child what happened... It was lots of fun and lots of laughs.

Lines and Angles Videos

In class today, I showed the students a video on Lines to help them differentiate perpendicular, parallel and intersecting lines.  The students thought it was great.  Then per their request, we watched a video on angles.  This went over acute, obtuse and right angles.  I promised them that I would put the links on our blog so that they could show them to you at home.  So, here they are..
